Issues in Composition Studies grad class
Has anyone who has been through the Rowan Graduate program or who is currently in the Rowan Graduate program taken the class Issues in Composition Studies? If so, how did you enjoy the class? And what type of assignments are involved? I assume it is primarily geared toward teachers, but does the class only concern issues of education?
I have registered for the class for the Fall semester. I was curious if I will take anything useful away from the class being that I am not a teacher.
Any info will help. Thanks!

Hi! I took Issues in Comp Studies w/ Dr. Herberg last spring. I enjoyed the flow of her class- she is quite entertaining and knows a ton about the subject. She used primarily WebCT(or whatever it’s called now) and there were no books to purchase, just a lot of scholarly papers to be printed out and responded to on a weekly basis- you will have to sign up for few sites to get some of these;) If she’s not the teacher then it may be a bit different…
The issue for some could be the subject though- at times, the reading might be somewhat boring, and overly theoretical to the point of…well, you get the idea. This class was great to have before the other course I took called Assessment of Writing. Much theory in here that lends itself to other topics both within and outside of the writing discipline.
There were portions of the class that were also student led which I enjoyed- some work, but rewarding none the less. The class isn’t necessarily geared towards teachers- just that many of the weekly readings deal with the development, implementation and flaws with teaching writing in the academic environment k-12+. About 3/4 of our class (out of 8 people) were teachers in the field…
Hope this helps.
